Dave’s right though – either get an annotated edition or read some of the many essays afterwards as they throw Carroll’s satire into sharp relief. For nonsense books they make a lot of sense.

J – I seem to recall being scared (scarred?) by The Roly Poly Pudding as well. Very dark stuff considering the audience.

Samuel Whiskers, or The Roly-Poly Pudding, is a genius story. It’s easily my favourite of Potter’s books probably because it used to scare me to death as a child. The passage above describes part of the sinister old house that provides such a great setting for a tale of abnormally huge rats that like nothing better than devouring hapless young kittens who get lost. Fab.

It was built in the days when people burnt logs of wood upon the hearth.The chimney stack stood up above the roof like a little stone tower, and the daylight shone down from the top, under the slanting slates that kept out the rain.”

Yay, I need to read the Alice books again, they rock. I persuaded my friend to get the Martin Garder annotated edition that my folks have; it’s cool, it explains all the in-jokes and science and stuff. Written for Americans, but you can’t have everything :p

How are things, by the way? I was thinking I should come see the folks sometime soon, so I could come and say hi.
